> What is endoscopy? What is endoscopy?Endoscopy (en-dahs-kuh-pee) is a minimally invasive, diagnostic medical procedure that is used to examine the inside of an organ in the body. This includes the esophagus, stomach and colon. Using equipment known as an endoscope, the doctor can directly look at specific areas to better evaluate and detect problems. Most of these procedures require sedation and a short recovery period. You should expect to spend about three hours in the endoscopy unit. The preparation for these tests is explained to you by your physician. Registration and ConsentThe admitting department will contact you before your procedure date to begin the registration process. A signed consent is necessary before the procedure can be performed. You will sign one consent form at the registration desk and another in the endoscopy unit. A parent or guardian must sign the consent form for minors. You need to bring insurance information (cards or forms) and your Social Security number to register. The Day of the ProcedureThe endoscopy department of Jewish Hospital opens at 6:30 a.m., Monday-Friday. Most patients are asked to arrive one hour before the scheduled procedure time. This time is used to prepare you for your procedure so that it can start on time. You should bring a list of any medications you are currently taking. Family membersFamily members are welcome and may wait for you in the designated waiting area. After the procedure is complete, one family member will be permitted to be with you in the recovery area. The family will be given a beeper so that they can be paged when the procedure is finished. Jewish Hospital uses NaviCare, a patient tracking system to help keep families informed of the patient’s progress. Important information about the ride homeAfter the procedure, you may experience temporary side effects which can include drowsiness and soreness. It is very important that you arrange for transportation home. The procedure will not be performed if you do not have someone to drive you home. Cab rides are only allowed if you are accompanied by an adult friend or family member. Bus rides are not acceptable. After you are homeYou should follow your doctor's instructions concerning medication and diet. A short instruction sheet will be sent home with you outlining things to watch for and any special instructions. If you have any problems, you should contact your physician. Parking InstructionsParking is free. You may park in the hospital parking garage, or in front of the Main Entrance. Enter at the Main Entrance.
